Developer Abbot Kinney envisioned a cultural mecca when he founded Venice in 1905. Today, a diverse group of people call this beachfront resort town home. “The Venice of America” continues to attract artists, young professionals, retailers, tourists, and everyone in between.

- Venice Beach
Venice Beach is known as one of the great L.A. beaches, and for good reason. The three-mile coastline offers stunning views of the Pacific. Relax by the shore, swim in the clear waters, and marvel at the sunset. Play beach volleyball or rent a board and paddle out into the ocean.
- Venice Breakwater
This famous surf spot is an artificial barrier where the waves break on both sides. It’s known for mellow rides and relatively short waves, making it perfect for beginners. Learn from experienced surfers who offer year-round beginner and intermediate classes seven days a week.
This spot also has the finest sand in all of Venice Beach, making it an excellent place for sand sculpting.
- Ocean Front Walk
Lined with specialty shops and restaurants, Venice Beach’s iconic boardwalk is the best place to go peoplewatching. The quirky crowd, street performers, and fortunetellers never fail to entertain. You can also skate or cycle along the boardwalk, get a temporary tattoo, or buy souvenirs.
- Venice Pier
This 1,310-foot pier has weathered storms and earthquakes since it opened in 1964. It’s a wonderful spot for fishing. It’s not unusual to catch mackerel, halibut, kelp bass, and smelts while fishing here, while leopard sharks have been caught on rare occasions.
- Venice Canals
These manmade canals evoke the romantic atmosphere of Venice, Italy. Go on a gondola ride or take a leisurely stroll along the canals to admire the water. Many of the old lavish homes that line the canals have been restored, while new ones have been built.
- Venice Skatepark
At 16,000 square feet, the Venice Skatepark features a concrete bowl and various elements that allow you to experience street skateboarding in an exhilarating but safe environment. This premier facility has appeared in video games like Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and is a popular filming location.
- Abbot Kinney Boulevard
GQ Magazine called Abbot Kinney Boulevard “The Coolest Block in America” in its first Style Bible issue. Here you’ll find an eclectic mix of boutiques, galleries, bars, and restaurants. Whether you’re looking for designer clothing, limited edition Japanese shoes, or surf tees, this vibrant shopping destination has something neat to offer.
- Venice Beach Recreation Center
Sports enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the recreation center. Tennis, volleyball, basketball, and handball courts can be found here, along with several play areas for children. The center organizes handball and paddle tennis tournaments, as well as bodybuilding contests.
- Murals
Renowned muralist Rip Cronk created almost a dozen murals in Venice. Some of these include “Portrait of Abbot Kinney,” “Venice on the Half Shell,” and the 40-foot “Hobnobbing in Venice.” Street art by other artists such as Jonas Never can also be found here.
